MIDCOAST HEALTH CARE REFORM

Citizens United for Single Payer/Private Delivery Health Care

LD 1072 will update a 2002 study on the feasibility of establishing a universal single-payer healthcare system in Maine. The bill directs the Legislative Council to contract with a qualified consultant to update a December 2002 study conducted by Mathematica Policy Research. Estimates from the 2002 Mathematica model indicated that the establishment of a single-payer system in Maine would ultimately result in net savings in healthcare spending within five years. The savings would result from things like enhanced control of hospital budgeting and provider reimbursement, reduced administrative costs, and enhanced access to primary and preventative care. (Information from Maine People's Alliance).
